I'm not ashamed to admit that the best gift I got this year was a kitchen appliance. As someone who works from home, lunch had become a total bore until my wife gave me my very own Panini maker.
Like those industrial Panini presses you see in lunch spots around town, the Hamilton Beach Gourmet Sandwich Maker is a pretty straight-forward affair -- it's essentially just a couple of hinged electric grill pans -- but man-oh-man does this thing make a meal.

Outstanding clock! The Serpentine is a wooden gear clock. Its whimsical curves offer an artistic contrast to the more traditional Ascent clock. You can build this wooden gear clock from a ready-to-assemble kit. Or, you can use a scroll saw to cut the parts from do-it-yourself patterns.

When the site for a product is unusably hip, you have to remember: It's for the kids. The Zipit site gives me a headache every time I view the Flash-only crazy navigation screen, but the product is compelling. The
Zipit Messenger 2 ($150) includes Wi-Fi access for unified instant messaging--single buddy list--with AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN Messenger, as well as photo viewing, local music playback, and music streaming, all in a compact form factor. There are no fees for IM usage, and free access at 9,000 U.S. McDonald's locations (via Wi-Fi network operator Wayport) is included.

Make guests stop and look with the
Stoplight Pendant Lamp. Made from, yes, a real lens from an old traffic light, the lamp looks surprisingly great in any decor. Order a green lamp and yellow lamp to complete the look throughout out your place.

I've always been a skeptic of automatic drink makers, but shaken or stirred the
Waring Pro Electric Martini Maker makes the perfect
martini every time. Simply add vodka/gin, a bit of dry vermouth and ice to the 20-oz. stainless-steel cocktail shaker (the cap doubles as a 1-oz. jigger) hit the on switch (which is touch pad in the shape of an olive that lights up green), press "shake" or "stir," and your done. All that is left to do is strain the martini into a chilled cocktail glass and enjoy!

It really doesn't get more minimalist than this. The
Battery Lamp ($35) is a tiny LED table lamp powered by a D-Cell battery that also doubles as its base. The lamp even has a working pull chain to turn it on and off. Simple, and simply awesome.
