If you’ve been waiting for high-def disc players to dip below the $200 mark, a trip to the local Wal-Mart may be in your future. The retail giant recently confirmed that it has begun selling Toshiba’s HD-A2 HD DVD Player at the record low price of $198 (for in-store purchases only).

Released earlier this year, the 1080i HD-A2 is the entry-level player in Toshiba’s lineup of second-gen HD DVD players, and has received generally positive reviews from both the pros and consumers alike. Originally issued with a $499 price tag, the deck’s MSRP has been steadily dropping throughout the year.

Take note that this Wal-Mart deal comes only weeks before the player’s successor (the HD-A3) is due to hit stores with a $299 price tag, but with both players sporting the same basic specs, if you’re in the market for an inexpensive HD DVD player, there’s no reason not to take advantage of this deal.
