Dish ViP722: A full-featured DVR

image In August of last year, Dish Network announced their latest high definition DVR, the ViP722. This DVR has many of the same features and functions you’d find on a standard DVR, but takes them a step further.

The ViP722 is a dual-tuner DVR, meaning that you can record one channel while you watch another. Or if you’re just recording, you can record two programs at the same time. This newest DVR also features 500GB of storage, which allows recording up to 55 hours of HD programming and 350 hours of SD programming.

All the features mentioned so far can also be found on most modern DVRs from other providers. Dish separates itself from others with a few unique features:

  • 30-second skip feature, convenient for skipping commercials
  • IP call-back, which allows customers who may not have a phone line to still order Pay-Per-View (PPV) programming, etc.
  • Ability to connect external storage via one of the two USB connections allows for easily expandable storage
  • Ability to output to two different TVs, one HD and one SD, directly from the unit
  • Dish on Demand - An online store accessed through the menu where you can rent the newest releases
  • Ability to link multiple Dish receivers in other rooms to share recorded content
  • Ability to transfer your recordings to portable Archos media players via PocketDish service

I’ve been a DirecTV subscriber for over 10 years, but given that DirecTV appears to be abandoning over-the-air (OTA) reception in their newest line of DVRs, I will likely be looking for a more forward-thinking provider of television services. From what I’ve seen of Dish Network’s newest DVR, my search may be over.
