Do you go hiking or camping a lot? Do you find yourself getting lost a lot? If the answer is “yes,” then you should probably stop hiking or camping. Barring that, however, Spot could come in handy.
Spot (SPT — Satellite Personal Tracker) is a bright orange device, about the size of a PDA, that keeps track of where you are.
If (when?) you realize that you’ve been walking in circles and you’re never going to get out of that blasted canyon, press the “911″ button on Spot and it will transmit your position, along with a custom text message, over all available emergency frequencies.
After that drama, find a nice…spot, to sit and wait for rescue. As a bonus, imagine your family laughing at you while they go to Spot’s Web site and locate you on the handy Google Maps interface.
Spot is $170, plus $100 per year in subscription fees. With luck, you’ll never have to use it. But for the cartographically challenged (look it up), Spot is cheap insurance.
