My wife, bless her heart, gave me a home theater for my birthday (well, the reality of marriage being what it is, she really just gave me a card that said, “Go buy yourself a home theater…”).
I was torn. I want one, sure, but the wiring sucks. Right now, we have all our home video gear in an entertainment center. Behind that is a trainwreck of wiring, but for a casual viewer, it’s a clean set-up.
But when you go to a 5.1 speaker system — the hallmark of any home theater — you have a problem: rear speakers.
To get the true surround-sound experience, you need speakers behind you. And our basement is terrible for this. The wall where the couch is has open space on either side, so to wire something behind the couch would require about 50-feet of wire strung along the wall. My wife would be fuming.
So, I was happy to find that there’s a wireless option now. Rocketfish makes this snazzy little wireless unit. You plug it into the wall, and throw it under the couch or something on the opposite side of the room. You plug your surround sound speakers into the wall, and into the Rocketfish box. A transmitter plugs into your amplifier and sends audio across the room to it.
Voila! Rear surround sound speakers that are disconnected from the main unit. No wires, no fuss, no irritated wife.
About $99 at any Best Buy (Rocketfish is one of Best Buy’s internal brands).
